Victoria Fringe Festival 2017 – Six Magicians

Review by Kelly J Clark – Showbill.ca Managing Editor

August 27, 2017

Andrew Brimstone has long been one of the darlings of the The Paper Street Theatre Company and Dungeons and Dragons Improv, but on his own he proves that he has what it takes to be a solo artist while dazzling with his irresistible charm.

Six Magicians is one part magic show one part memoir as Brimstone traces his career as a magician through his life and five other personae, each a familiar illusionist archetype that he is able to make fresh with wit, laughs, and raw chutzpah.

Brimstone pays homage to his mystical roots and their foundation in the teaching’s of Victoria’s legendary Tony Eng, the late owner of Tony’s Trick and Joke Shop, which was a touchstone for countless performers, including this reviewer. Brimstone’s performance is at once both fresh and dazzling, while simultaneously a heartfelt eulogy for his departed teacher and bygone years. It’s comedic sendup of a man and a vulnerable glimpse into his true love of the magician’s art. And more than that, it’s full of some pretty darn good magic tricks.

Tony would be proud of you, Andrew. You did good.

Bottom Line

Andrew Brimstone is magic. If you want to see the six best magicians of your lifetime in one place, in one body, go see this show.
