Victoria Fringe Festival 2017 – A Woman’s Guide to Peeing Outside & Other Adventures…

A Woman’s Guide to Peeing Outside and Other Adventures… is Holly Brinkman’s one-woman show about… going number one? Sort of.
Stories about peeing, or needing to pee, or “how-to pee” standing up when you lack the male appendage comically perforate the show, but aren’t what it’s really about (as the “Other Adventures” in the title gives away). In a society that tends to favour men, how does one woman navigate it?
Brinkman’s show chronologically spans her life: as an eight-year-old in the interior of BC (when she first contended with body image issues), to a celeb-obsessed teen (conceding her unbridled desire for Jack Dawson), to struggling as an actress in East Vancouver for a year before “giving it all up” for academia in Montreal. They are stories of a small town kid who grew up in the ’90s, dreaming of a life worthy of a movie script (before realising that a normal life can be just as complicated). As Brinkman might’ve hoped for as a high school theatre nerd, she is every bit the likeable leading lady that audiences root for.
Brinkman is a studied storyteller. She spoke to friends in the crowd minutes before the show started with the same ease as she stood at the front of the stage. As she performs, she engages the audience without losing the narrative—she earnestly takes in the laughs (and there are a lot of laughs) and the occasional muffled comment from the crowd who can’t help but lean over to their friends and remark on how they’d done something similar. Brinkman knows that in specificity there’s familiarity. Both women and men (yes, men too) will recognise themselves in her quest for self-worth and purpose or, in the very least, having to pee outside when there’s nowhere else to go. When you gotta go, you gotta go, and Brinkman’s show is so funny it just might make you.
THE BOTTOM LINE
A Woman’s Guide to Peeing Outside and Other Adventures… is a one-woman show that’s about more than just going number one. But, Holly’s quest to self-worth is so funny it might just make you!
