Victoria Fringe Festival 2017 – Spec
Review by Kelly J Clark – Showbill.ca Managing Director

Speculative fiction is the name of the game at this anthology of four strange, cerebral, and at times silly stories told by Minnesota native Ben San Del.
Stoner robots, the origins of a couch potato, and mind-melding with the dead are only the beginnings of these weird golden tales. These stories are fun enough to please, imaginative enough to surprise, and unique enough that they inspire the writer in us to want to make more like them. All of this is told in a style that is both conversational, light, and so flippantly casual that Ben makes being an extraordinary storyteller look maddeningly easy.
Ben is a four-time ‘Audience Pick’ encore winner at his hometown fringe and it’s obvious why: he’s a man deeply in love with his imagination and blessed with the ability to share its fruit. The crowd on Friday night was too small for a man who performs as if he’s used to overflowing audiences, and the venue, the massive Roxy Theatre, feels paradoxically wasted on Ben’s intimate, conversational style. You should go see this show and you should bring all your friends, even if they don’t like theatre–especially if they don’t like theatre. Ben’s stories might change their minds.
Clever, insightful, and above all else charming, Spec is a delight from start to finish that deserves a full house.
