Victoria Fringe Festival 2017 – Amaze

David A. Eliot is a showman, magician, stunt performer, and comedian. His show, Amaze, proves that he’s earned all of those titles, especially magician.
The show is the usual simple setup for a magic show: a few easy tricks, a bit of banter, a bit of self deprecating humor, and then—BAM–a jaw-dropping trick, followed by progressively wild and intricate feats of illusion and legerdemain, culminating in a final stunt performance that leaves the audience rapt with applause. It’s a rote formula for magic presentation that doesn’t really break the mold–probably because it’s a really effective mold.
Eliot himself has the charm of a boy-next-door and knows how to fall back on his inherent sweetness to sell himself to the audience. He’s easy to like, and he’s earnest in his love of magic and desire to pull the audience into his art. If a critique could be made, it’s that he rushes a bit during the banter between the tricks and it feels like he’s used to longer shows. In fact, on Saturday’s show he almost went into overtime, which probably proves the point.
If you love magic, Amaze is a great show for skilled magic and solid laughs, and it’s even great for family. If you don’t like magic, give it a try anyway: this magician might cast a spell you.
