Victoria Fringe Festival 2017 – Fake Ghost Tours

Review by Chad Jarvie-Laidlaw – Showbill.ca Editorial Director

Did you know that Victoria could perhaps be the most haunted city in all of Canada? Fake Ghost Tours takes a group of Fringegoers around some of the Most Haunted Locations in Victoria’s downtown.

Led by Abdul Aziz and his brother Shawn O’Hara, these tours start in Bastion Square and take you to sites of grisly murders, massive massacres, and catastrophic fires. Hitherto unreported hauntings like those of sailors killed by swarms of killer seals are right under our feet, or perhaps just off our shore. There are tales of the misfortunes of bee farmers, the secret history of statues, and the Eternal Monarch, Dread Queen Victoria even makes an appearance. Victoria is just lousy with ghosts, and this tour does not disappoint.

Clearly, Aziz and O’Hara are practiced at weaving a yarn, and they’re top notch in this walking show. Much of the humour is similar to O’Hara’s hit from last year’s Fringe, Field Zoology 101, and will leave you in stitches. There’s a lot to love from these two, and their storytelling chemistry and dedication to the absurdity of the premise is fantastic. Almost as funny as the two of them are the confused looks from regular tourists, walking by wit puzzled looks as they hear about places haunted by the ghosts of dog murderers.

Bottom Line

Aziz and O’Hara are great storytellers, and have come up with some hilarious “historical” anecdotes about our city. Go and take a walk with them, Fake Ghost Tours is better than any real ghost tour you could do.
